Advanced Treatment for Degenerative Disc Disease

Personalized Care Plans to Help Relieve Pain and Restore Mobility

As we age, the risk of degenerative disc disease increases, leading to chronic pain and reduced spinal flexibility. At Girard Orthopaedic Surgeons Medical Group, Inc., personalized care plans are available to relieve disease pain, tingling, and numbness caused by this disease. Our team of orthopaedic spine specialists provides surgical and nonsurgical treatment plans to help ease the pain.

What is degenerative disc disease?

Between your spinal vertebrae sit protective discs that absorb shock. The discs also support your spine’s function so you can bend and twist without discomfort.

Age-related changes in the spine wear away the disc’s tough outer shell and lead to degenerative disc disease. The breakdown of one or more discs allows the vertebrae to rub together, creating friction, inflammation, and pain.

While most people suffer some level of disc degeneration after 40, you’re more likely to develop degenerative disc disease due to risk factors like:

  • Spine Trauma (Injury)
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Gender (More Common in Women)
  • Manual Labor Jobs

Recognizing the Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease

The hallmark symptoms of degenerative disc disease are neck and back pain. The pain can come and go before ultimately lasting for months.

Degenerative disc disease can also cause pain, tingling, and numbness radiating into other body areas. If the damaged disc is in your upper (cervical) spine, you may experience neck, shoulder, and arm symptoms. Damaged discs in the lower (lumbar) spine can cause symptoms to radiate into the hips, buttocks, and legs.

If you experience these symptoms and over-the-counter medications don’t provide relief, call 858-455-6460 to schedule a diagnostic evaluation with us.

How We Diagnose Degenerative Disc Disease

Our specialists will complete a thorough physical exam and may order X-rays or other diagnostic imaging to assess spinal health and identify damaged discs.

Treatment options can include:

  1. Physical Therapy: Strengthens muscles supporting the spine.
  2. Medication: Oral pain relievers for severe pain.
  3. Steroid Injections: Reduce inflammation directly in the spine.
  4. Surgical Interventions:
    • Discectomy: Removal of part or all of the damaged disc.
    • Spinal Fusion: Enhances spine stability and prevents further inflammation.

Our goal is to restore your spine’s function and improve your quality of life through a combination of these treatments.
